Theoretical Value

Theoretical Value Stream Map

You are going to explain how you would map the process in any Logistics/ Procurement department in a fish food company. Create a current state map of that department/ your imaginary position.

  • What is the inventory you would be following?
Make sure to identify if it changes as it proceeds through the process and what it would look like.
For example a purchase request form (first inventory) would turn into a purchase order (second inventory) and would then turn into a purchased item (third inventory) when you order an item.

  • Identify what value the process has and the start and end of the process.
  • Create a theoretical value stream map, you will not be able to do any measurements but I would like to know how you would convert inventory to time and you should put the processing boxes on a map. Include as much information as you can.
  • What could be done to improve the process (2 or 3 suggestions)
  • What metric(s) would you use to monitor how the process was performing?
  • What are the lean tools that you would use to improve the process; how and why would you use them?
  • Describe what your future state would look like by drawing a future state map. (how you would handle the inventory in-between the processing steps) You will have flow, FIFO or a supermarket. You have to identify the delays due to inventory.

Your current state map doesn’t require any numbers for the inventory (you do have to identify
how you would do your calculations if you did have numbers)?
