Literature Effects on Children

 Literature Effects on Children

Children literature is the type of literature that approaches children by relating to their lives. In addition, children literatures are available in different forms and shapes like fairytales, short stories, and other literature materials. Sometimes, children literature may contain an ambiguous character, which helps both sides of the story the good and the bad. For example, the cat with the weird smile inAlice in wonderlandwas very ambiguous and do not have an actual side to stand with. Also, many people introduce literatures to their children at an early age, hoping that their children will learn the moral or the lesson behind these literatures. Also, some people agree with Ms. Gahwaji, when she said “Early behaviors such as "reading" from pictures and "writing" with scribbles are examples of emergent literacy and are an important part of children's literacy development.” (Par.1). Ms. Gahwaji shows that reading and writing for children at early age is crucial for their literacy development. On the other hand, some people are avoiding children literature at an early age for their children, thinking that it will not help them neither now nor the future. Also, these people may read children literature with an ill-mannered character or a scene. However, I think that introducing literature to children at an early age is crucial to children’s future.
Literature is not only based on how the child react and understand the idea, literacy is also based on the parental school experience. Kelli Donohue said, “By providing a rich home literacy environment, parents support the academic growth of their children and aid in their literacy development.” (Pg.12) What Kelli meant is that a child’s literacy and their parent’s school experience have a positive connection between each other. Also, the amount of knowledge a child will receive from educated parents is better than what uneducated parents may provide. Furthermore, parents with a background of knowledge will be able to answer their child’s question in a way that will have it benefits in the future. In addition, parents can introduce literacy to their children by reading “The amount of family involvement, specifically parent-child interaction, plays a significant role in the predicting of preschool age children’s pre-literacy skills” (Lobo Pg.34). Any educated member of the family can help to improve the child literacy skills, reading 15 minutes a day or any literature activity for the child will help to improve the child’s literacy skills. Also, reading to a child will increase the amount of vocabulary a child will have before school.
Furthermore, children’s literacy skills will improve by helping them to read short stories or easy sentences; this can only be achieved if the parent frequently reads for their child. Also, providing the right environment for the children will help. By the right environment I means the place where all the aspects to forge child’s mind are there. In addition, an old Arabic proverb says, “What learnt young is craved on stone”. Children always absorb what they have in their surroundings, and what they learn at young age will stay with them till the future. This leads to the conclusion, which is the child may absorb the undesirable morals or activities along with what the parent desires their children to learn.
A child’s literacy skills can be enhanced in preschool too, where the teacher will provide some of the knowledge and the literacy materials in the classroom. Vogel said “the teacher using literacy materials while interacting verbally or nonverbally with one or more children. This could include such things as the teacher reading a book to a group of children, modeling how a telephone book is used, taking a dictation from a child, or writing with a child.”(Pg.50). A child reacting with the materials in the classroom will have a positive effect on the child’s future literacy skills. On the other hand, some parents does not agree with the importance of introducing literacy to their children at an early age, “Some children start school with relatively low skills, and are not well prepared for school. This can be critical since these children will fall even further behind their peers in school” (Son Pg.1). These children are falling behind, because they did not receive enough literacy skills to accomplish what their peers in school accomplished. The blame falls on the parents who did not introduce their children to literature earlier. For example, Little Red Ridding hood original story had the little girl getting in the bed with the wolf and gets rapped, this is one of the reasons behind why parents may not want to introduce literature to their children at early age. However, children will always receive benefits in the future. Some of the benefits a child’s will have are better grades at school and better literacy skills as reading and writing. Also, children will have better relations with others at their age, because of the skills they have learnt in the past.
In conclusion, introducing literature to children at an early age is crucial and has its benefits in the future. Also, parents have a strong effect on their child’s literacy skills, and this effect comes from reading to the child. Furthermore, the parental school experience is another factor of improving the child’s future skills. Literature materials in preschool classrooms are important, because the teacher will provide the ideas and the children will act with the materials in the class. Preparing children’s literacy skills to school is very important, so the child willbe able to maintain the same level as their peers.
