Strategy does do all those things but it's really about competitive advantage.  That's how a company gains in the marketplace.  Competitive advantage allows a company to gain marketshare by either providing a unique product or being the low cost producer of a similar product.  Either the company makes more profit selling a unique item or make more profit by producing at a lower cost.  That's what's important about strategy -  it needs to produce these things.
