In the Riviera Beach black morning
where the secret cold is hidden
from tourists, where only workers
and fishermen on an early mackerel tide
know freezing is a South Florida word,
a 17 year old boy walks to the back door
of Morrison's Cafeteria. Rats scatter
as he mumbles past bloody fryer boxes
and through the greasy backdoor smell.
He hits the lights at the breaker box,
stumbles to the bathroom for starched
white work pants. Ten more minutes
he figures he can steal,
so he sits on the toilet seat and leans his head
on the sticky wall. Chef Narville bangs
the door as he walks down the hall
to change in the black bathroom.
Saturday begins. This is it.
In another world the sun will rise
over the sea. Lovers and drunks sleep
in the sand. His girlfriend is wrapped
in blankets, home. Her touch
still on his hands, but even that
won't save him, so he struggles out
to the stockroom. One more day, he thinks.
