The mid-term exam consists of five short-answer questions, which draw from the course textbook readings, the class modules, and your understanding of the principles of writing gained through the first three writing assignments. The midterm asks you to recall definitions of material from the text and to apply it to your writing situations. Answer each of the following questions with a ½ to 1 page response. Each question is worth 20 points, totaling 100 points for the midterm. You must answer all five questions!
  1. Name two types of prewriting strategies, and describe how they can be used in writing or how you have used them in your writing.
  2. What is the difference between a comparison and contrast paragraph and a cause-and-effect paragraph? How do those kinds of analyses differ in the way they approach a subject?
  3. It has been said that the difference between an analytical argument and persuasion is the selection of a specific audience. Why is choosing an audience so important for persuasion?
  4. Describe the individual pieces of a business letter.
  5. What is a refutation, and why is it important in persuasion?
Write a factual paper that describes your college major. It should look at such things as what courses you need to take in your major discipline, how difficult the major is, and what kinds of jobs you can expect to get by majoring in this area. Finish the paper by providing a conclusion. Be creative! (Length: 2-3 pages)  My college major is project management.

Whenever you write something, it is important to keep in mind who your audience is. Choose two of the assignments (assignments) you composed during this class and discuss how you dealt with the issue of audience as you wrote the assignments. For each assignment, who was your audience? How did selecting (or not selecting) an audience affect how you wrote your assignments? (Length: 2-3 pages)

The writing you do is based on the information you have available to you. The information can come from different sources. For example, it may come from your personal experiences. Or else you may have gotten it through an Internet search or a book or possibly from another source. Choose two of the assignments from the class and discuss where the information came from that you used in your writing. How much came from your experience? How much from research? How much from the viewpoints of people you know? In short, discuss the resources (both your research as well as your own thoughts and experiences) that you used as you wrote and revised the assignments. (Length: 2-3 pages)
